It was a grand (opening) affair!

Bill Thompson and Dr. Joel Bregman

Thompson cited a unique partnership between state and federal government, the University of Missouri, a “vigorous” and “enthusiastic” foundation board, and the faculty and staff of the Center as crucial to its continued success and growth.
“Talk about a partnership!” Thompson said. “This is how you get something done!”

University of Missouri Chancellor Brady Deaton echoed Thompson’s sentiments stating, “It takes a community to achieve the society that we are working toward. The Thompson Center is an excellent example of families, legislators, and the University as a whole working together to improve the lives of individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders.”

When Missouri Governor Jay Nixon stood to speak he acknowledged Missouri’s first lady, Georganne Nixon, who accompanied him to the historic event. He also recognized the families who benefit from the Center stating, “Parents of children with autism turn to the Thompson Center for support and most of all hope. It’s a place where success is earned in first words and big smiles.”

Dr. Janet Farmer, director of academic programs for the Thompson Center, took a moment before the introduction of the new executive director to thank Jim Poehling, vice chancellor for Health Sciences, for his role in making the Center a reality.

“The fact that this building exists is Jim’s legacy to the Thompson Center.” Farmer said.

Poehling served as executive director for the Center from June, 2008 to December 1, 2010.

As Dr. Joel Bregman stepped to the microphone, his plans for the Center’s future, the plans that many were anxious to hear, were quickly addressed.

“I’m going to focus on the expansion of clinical services, professional training for schools and the community and research.” He said, adding that his main goal is to expand the Thompson Center’s already national recognition for its programs, services and research.”
