The Social Competence Program is now enrolling youth diagnosed with ASD for the Spring 2010 semester. This is a group-based intervention intended to improve the use and integration of a variety of social skills (facial expression and emotions, sharing ideas and turn taking in conversation, and social problem solving). Students have the opportunity to view skill models and practice with peers under the guidance of educators specializing in ASD. This is a targeted intervention designed specifically for youth ages 11-14 with a confirmed diagnosis on the Autism spectrum who participate in general education settings and have sufficient language skills to be active in the group setting. Additional background information about the child will be needed to determine enrollment.

The group meets during one-hour sessions twice per week for 10 weeks at the Thompson Center in Columbia. Students will participate in a series of assessments before and after the program in order to monitor change in their skills. The group will begin in late January or early February. Space is limited and eligible students will be enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost of this service may be covered for clients of Boone County Family Resources and some scholarship funding may be available. Contact Dr. Melissa Herzog at herzogm@missouri.edu to learn more about the program and if it is a good fit for your child and your family.
