Preparing special educators
Students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) often require specialized teaching strategies that support classroom success. The University of Missouri Department of Special Education offers a unique master’s degree that includes a focus on evidence-based practices for students with ASD. Funded by the federal Office of Special Education Programs, this program teaches special educators to integrate all areas of the curriculum in order to develop social competence benchmarks for students with ASD and related conditions. The program includes:
- Specialized coursework on social competence;
- Experience in a classroom designed to enhance the transition from school to college or work.
Interested applicants should be ready to attend graduate school full time and to pursue positions that support students with autism after graduation. Approved applicants will receive:
- Full tuition;
- $15,000 annual stipend;
- Opportunities for interdisciplinary study with Thompson Center faculty.
Program admittance will adhere to admission criteria identified for the master's degree programs within the Department of Special Education.
