The Social Competence Intervention-Cognitive Behavior Intervention (CBI) is one program on a continuum of individualized behavior interventions offered through the Thompson Center. This program utilizes cognitive and behavioral intervention (CBI) methodology to support the needs of children and youth referred for difficulties functioning in everyday contexts with others. It focuses on instruction, modeling, practice and behavioral feedback to build skills such as the recognition of emotions in self and others, sharing ideas, recognizing facial expressions, social problem solving, conversational manners, and myriad other adaptive behavioral and social skills. Individualized assessments and goals are developed for each participant in order to maximize success in the program.
Ideal Candidates for Social Competence Intervention-CBI Services
- Are between the ages of 6 and 14
- Have a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Access the general education curriculum and attend a general education class for at least one period a day
- Have identifiable social skill deficits across one or more settings, including home, school or community

- Turn taking
- Basic conversational skills
Key Components of Social Competence Intervention-CBI
- Initial informational session with parents and participants
- Twice weekly one-hour sessions for 10 weeks
- Individual and group activities designed to meet the specific needs of each child
- Assessments conducted before and after the intervention to identify each childŐs progress in the program
- Presentation of key curriculum components to parents throughout the sessions to support continued growth and maintenance in social competence
