The Thompson Center is dedicated to the highest standards when making decisions about diagnoses. Misuse of diagnosis can lead to confusion for families and other providers and can lead to improper treatment planning. To ensure careful and evidence-based assessment, Thompson Center uses the Diagnostic Statistical Manual-5th edition (DSM-5) as its guide for assigning specific diagnoses. Two popular diagnoses often given to children include Sensory Processing Disorder and Auditory Processing Disorder. Because clear criteria regarding these conditions are not established, and because they are not included as diagnoses in the DSM-5, the Thompson Center has determined that it is the professional responsibility of our clinicians not to give or recognize either of these when children are seen for diagnostic or treatment programs.
