Child Health Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics Rotation
The developmental rotation will allow the learner to experience a variety of assessment and treatment clinics providing diagnosis and treatment to children ages birth to 18 with neurodevelopmental disorders in the clinic setting. Learning objectives for this rotation include:
- Solidify knowledge of developmental milestones and ways to evaluate delays/concerns.
- Familiarization with diagnostic criteria/assessment tools for the most commonly occurring conditions (ADHD, autism, speech and language delays, motor delays, emotional/behavioral concerns).
- Medical work-up/evaluation for developmental disorders.
- Learn strategies for focused history and physical targeting developmental concerns.
- Develop working knowledge of systems of care available to children with developmental conditions, including, early Intervention, school and community resources for children with developmental conditions.
- Introduction to medication management for ADHD, sleep disturbances and behavioral concerns.
- Opportunities to work as part of a team with PT, OT, ST, neuropsychology, dietitian and family resource specialists to learn about the expertise of each specialty.
- Overview of current research related to autism and neurodevelopmental disorders and incorporation into clinical practice.
Child Psychiatry Rotation
The Thompson Center Psychiatry clinic provides diagnostic evaluations and pharmacological management to children on the Autism Spectrum up to 18 years old. Medications are monitored through our behavioral medication diary program in which families call a nurse to report any positive or negative changes over the preceding week.
The Thompson Center has a commitment to training Child Psychiatry Fellows about the needs of persons with autism. The Psychiatry Fellows acquire skills to improve the outcomes of individuals with behavioral challenges. These skills include evidence-based assessment, intervention strategies and interdisciplinary approaches to service delivery.
Health Professions Training Programs
The Thompson Center has a long track record of dedication to the training of future allied health professionals across disciplines and levels of education. The Thompson Center provides a rich and diverse opportunity for students and trainees in the School of Health Professions within the Thompson Center’s Division of Health Professions. Trainees obtain supportive and strategic supervision through practica, internship, and post-doctoral levels of training for children with autism, neurodevelopmental, and acquired neuropsychological conditions.
Department of Health Psychology
- MU graduate students in speech-language pathology participate in a variety of therapeutic and diagnostic experiences at the Thompson Center, including individual therapy, group therapy, interdisciplinary team evaluations, and discipline-specific evaluations. Other training opportunities exist for undergraduate students in the Communication Science and Disorders program.
- MU graduate students in speech-language pathology have the opportunity to apply for a paid graduate student position at the Thompson Center for additional experiences in working with children and their families and collaborating with professionals in other disciplines during the diagnostic process.
- Varied practicum and other training opportunities exist for graduate occupational therapy students at MU.
- Graduate Assistantship at the Thompson Center for a graduate occupational therapy student at MU.
The TIPS for Kids program
- An interdisciplinary training program funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration. TIPS for Kids is one of the 52 Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disorders (LEND) programs across 44 states nationwide and consists of psychology, social work, nutrition, medicine, special education, applied behavior analysis, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, parent advocates, and self-advocates. https://www.facebook.com/TIPS4KidsMoLEND/.
